Technologies like RSS allow us to consume content from people we follow to stay in touch with what’s being shared amongst peers of like mind.
The value a person in the new media landscape represents is directly proportionate to the value of the content they’re associated with by those who consumer it.
This new form of consumption is still a form of relationship management as it feeds back responses that fuel further communication but it does not suggest that all of a sudden we must feel compelled to discuss the important matters in our lives with 500 Facebook fans or Twitter followers.
Maintaining Reciprocal Relationships with Every Follower Even if All Customers Is Not Practical
Unless you're selling a high value items worth tens of thousands of dollars and you only have a handful of customers who you earn enough from to not have to speak to anyone else.... you cannot spend all day engaging in two way relationships with every twitterer, Facebook fan or YouTube subscriber that receives your content feed...
Social Media Is the Same as Any Other Media...
It's a medium on which publishers can communicate a message or entertainment to an audience.
No different to a TV station, radio or the newspaper except social media comes with the added bonus or burden, which ever way you look at it.... of the audience being interactive.
Unlike the telephone which provided us two way communications many years ago, social media has given us 1000 way conversations that can transcend both space and time.
